“My first year was coming to a close and I was given the option
of discharge, not realizing I had not fulfilled my obligation and could be
recalled. I was elated to learn that I was to miss the Korean conlict as
that began the day after my discharge and all discharges were then frozen.
”
(Navy records show that George entered service 9/11/1949 and
was discharged 7/2/1950.)
“Mary was again pregnant but was holding up well. We cleaned our little house
from top to bottom anticipating the return of the damage deposit but that was denied us. We later found this happened to many and little could be done from out of state to demand it.
The day we left it was about 105 degres and we had no air conditioning in the
old Dodge car. As we drove through the Sacramento Valley Geo III was beet red
but never complained.”

“The trip was uneventful and we were sure glad to get home and see
the families we had left over a year ago. We planned on some free time
and then would look for work. My parents and we rented a cabin not far
from Austin and spent a week being good and lazy. It all ended quickly
and searching for a job became upper most in our minds.”

“The type of practice in 1950 with no specialized training was
called general practice. This was what I wanted to in a small town
in Minnnesota, preferably a town with a lake. ... We may have looked
elsewhere but found ourselves in Little Falls, Minnesota situated on
the Mississippi River and close to many lakes. This seemed to be
the answer as it had many things we wanted such as a smaller town, good
schools, good hospital and a stable economy but it was a bit far north
yet in our eagerness to get started we chose it.”

“ The town was about 7,000 with a beautiful hospital, good
schools, and a stable community. There were 6 other doctors practicing
in town and several more in close surrounding towns, none of whom were
specialists. Malpractice was $35 a year and we wondered why we needed it.

“What a joy now to have both a boy and a girl and she was just
like a doll (but a noisy one).…
Most of the time she was the more aggressive one and always came up with
ideas way beyond her age. It was a joy to come home after a busy day to
find out what new had happened for that day... ”

“We finally bought a home for $22,000, one block from the hospital.
This was a 3 bedroom two story with a single attached garage. It had
a wonderful basement with fire place, recreation room, and a workshop
area near the furnace. The children seemed delighted to be in the area
'helping out'”.

“The office building was a cheaply constructed, poorly conceived
and inadequate one story building north on main street in a heavily
traveled area of town. I would later hate this building bu was so eager
to start and so busy that I overlooked the inconveniences, shoddiness
and poor planning.”
