“We were then able to rent a house on 4th street which seemed more than adequate. We bought some new furniture and settled in.”

“A number of new families, mostly business and professional people, moved into town. We became fast friends with these and spent many wonderful times with them. It was hard to have a party just for one or two couples so every event included every one on the list. it seems as if there was alsway a party at someone's house on weekends.”

“We finally bought a home for $22,000, one block from the hospital. This was a 3 bedroom two story with a single attached garage. It had a wonderful basement with fire place, recreation room, and a workshop area near the furnace. The children seemed delighted to be in the area 'helping out'. ”

“Mary and I had been invited to spend a weekend in Chicago by another couple…”

“Getting into Chicago we proceeded to a hotel that was to give us free lodging … The hotel was a dump and occupied by transients. After losing a good night's sleep we left for improved quarters and attended baseball games among other things.”
